I decided last year not to do any more WIP’s because people seem to lose interest in them, and the final product is often totally ignored. This was going to be my first image-less post, but no-one would read it, so I compromised by including a tiny sample of the work in progress.
I have always wanted to create a painting of Creaturina operating at full noise, but have never been confident I could do the subject justice. This was for several reasons. Firstly, as she only operates at her max on the battlefield or when confronted by large numbers, this would mean a painting with multiple figures, something I’ve never done. Secondly, when she does confront large numbers, Creatuie moves so fast, the human eye can’t track her, she kills dozens in a split second; this was always going to be a hard thing to convey. Thirdly, as she can open steel armor with her fingers, and whatever’s inside a whole lot easier, this was also always going to be a spectacularly bloody piece.
Well, I’m doing that piece now. I’ve been wanting to do another Creatuie for a while, and the few recent Alice’s got me in the mood. I am obviously more confident in my skills than I was a year ago, because I just went for it, and it’s looking gorgeous. I solved the portrayal of speed problem with the spectacular amount of blood/blood mist situation, using the explosions of gore to convey her awesome speed and lethality. To handle the multiple characters problem, I created a standard proportion male silhouette and repeated it seven more times, changing the postures, then arranged them for the scene, Creatuie included. This got the scale and proportions looking pretty good. Now I just have to work into them with detail.
I am illustrating the scene where Creatuie saves Alice by taking out the eight bandits who have almost killed the poor, harmless girl. I’m really pleased with it so far. I feel I’ve created a genuinely horrifying Creaturina… someone who would really terrify you should you see her do her thing, especially if she was coming straight at you. I’m so engrossed in it that I stayed at my Mac through a 6.2 magnitude earthquake this afternoon, it went on so long I did a save on the work in case things got much worse.
