Seri and I have been out taking pictures (:
Well, it literally took the better part of two days (in hours), but I managed to get my spooky Seraphim back (mostly) after giving her a mesh head. It was a huge learning curve. I took screen shots of all her original body proportions (you have to change the whole body when you put the head on), then just copied them all in the shape editor… her face still did not look the same, and it took hours of tweaking to get her as close as I could to her original look. Luckily, I also took front and side photo’s of her without her hair, so I had those to refer to, too.
Took hours of searching to get her some gorgeous, glossy, liquid black mesh eyes… ones that worked with the head, the first ones I got didn’t (black ones, that is, the standard mesh ones that came with the head worked perfectly, but they were not Seri’s eyes!). I’ve changed her lips to black-red, and given her gorgeous black-red eyeshadow (benefits of a mesh head!)… just about went insane trying to understand the makeup applier! Re-learned forgotten stuff, like how to find HUD’s that vanish off the screen… and learned new stuff, like how to find HUD’s that are still on the screen, but are frikken invisible! Arrrrgh!! Learned to (and how to) check where an item is going to attach, instead of just hitting ‘wear’, which kept knocking the damned mesh body parts off the body, despite the mesh head/body now having a gazillion more attachment points, which is really cool, though.
My brain is a bit frizzeled, but, really, that was one of the reasons I did this, to leap into the deep end of all that technology I had been avoiding for years. Seri has had the same skin/body for 7 years, and I am very fond of her, so I was reluctant to do something that would make her not Seri. She looks slightly different, I simply cannot get her exactly as she was, but I’m putting that down to the effects of surgical trauma… the girl is mostly herself, but will never be the same. She has, after all, just received a new skull, internal body, and skin… how would that affect you?
I spent a lot of time with the camera zoomed right into her face while I played with various appliers, and she just did her thing, and occasionally she stepped right into the camera, so I could see inside her skull… and she has a brain! I don’t ever remember seeing that before, I don’t know how to deliberately look into her head, the camera won’t deliberately do it, and when it does by accident, I’ve not been quick enough to click on her brain to see what it is. I’m guessing it is something to do with the mesh head, someones little joke. I love SL, it’s so wonderfully strange.
Just in case those familiar with Seri think the above, heavily edited photo, does not resemble that sweet girl at all, here is an un-edited one of her, just being sweet (:
As you can see, Seraphim continues to evolve. She no-longer has the pure white, vampire skin she has had for the last 7 years. Her new skin is the palest I could find… I quite like it. The new skin changed her lips, but I like those, too. She has tattoo-layer makeup to give her back her black lips, and also give her cool eye makeup. She’s also picked up some nice ink… she’s always had tats, but they all vanished when she got the mesh body, so we went shopping for new ones that can be applied on the mesh bodies tattoo layers, as well as the underwear and clothing layers, so she’s actually got a couple of tattoos blended together, which look great.
Our recent quest to upgrade Seri has cost me thousands of L$ (Linden dollars), which begins to add up to a lot of RL$! But, hey, I’m on holiday, and it’s still a cheap holiday, compared to anything of similar magnitude I could do in RL. But… as you can see from where Seri is in this picture*, all this exploration of mesh and it’s creative potential to sculpt your avatar as a work of art, has lead us to the consideration of the inevitable (inexorable?) next step… a mesh head. At L$5000 plus, this really will make a real-world impact (around NZ$30), on top of all we’ve spent so far, which has been about NZ$70, so we are going to have a bit of a think about it, first. I doubt it will stop us because, as I say, it’s still a very cheap holiday! From what I’ve gleaned watching Strawberry Singh video’s, I will be in for hours of potentially frustrating work, having to re-shape the mesh head to make it into my unique Seri. I’m also not sure how her gorgeous, liquid-black eyes will work… apparently it’s recommended to use the supplied eyes. Seri with normal eyes would not be Seri.
*She is outside the Catwa mainstore. Catwa make mesh heads and makeup appliers for mesh heads, among other things.
Seri and I love it when we find fabulous new art work to put in the gallery! Today we discovered the work of Talullah Winterwolf at her little gallery in the Chelsea art district, across the road from the Virtual Chelsea Hotel. We checked her profile (at 7 years and 3 months, she’s been in SL for 3 months longer than us) and checked out the other places her work was. Her work is all fabulous, though way too expensive for us to buy more than 2, but we totally want to get more soon!
I spent most of today in SL, the longest I’ve played there for years, though most of it was not play, but an extremely frustrating, uphill grind. After reading this post by Strawberry Singh, I decided, after years of hesitation, to buy Seri a mesh body. I have very little understanding of mesh bodies, despite trying to gain one by reading posts like Strawberry writes, but I have always tried to dress Seri in really good quality gear, and knew mesh gear was better than non-mesh. But I love Seri as she looks, and couldn’t figure out if a mesh body would change her current looks (sorry, I’m a RL creative, not an SL nerd!)… anyway, bit the bullet, spent thousands of $L on body and new gear. Had instant problems with the Maitreya HUD, spent hours trying to figure out how to use it/why I couldn’t use it… watched a great video by Morgana Hilra, which was cute and funny and informative, but made me realise something was wrong, it wasn’t just because I am stupid. Wound up contacting Gryphon Ronas at Maitreya, who wound up whisking Seri off to her secret lair above the Maitreya shops, where she eventually discovered that, yes, I am stupid, as I’d not actually loaded the mesh body! (actually, I had, but I’d not noticed it had been displaced by one of the mesh clothing items). So, back to Seri’s place to try all her new mesh gear… still lots of problems! I hadn’t really realised you cannot layer mesh, which is a huge advantage non-mesh layers have.
So, after hours of struggle, we eventually got Seri looking pretty damned cute in all her new mesh finery. As a reward, we fired up the Gallery Tour HUD, something else we’ve not done for years, and that’s how we found Talullah!
Had to create a new room in the gallery to put her work, and some other new stuff. The gallery is now so big, Seri and I actually got lost while we were building the new room, had to do the rotate-camera-out-through-wall thing to get an idea of where we actually were, as apposed to where we thought we were. After years of it being narrow, we bought the land next to it, recently, to gain some more room and much-needed prims… and only a few weeks later, Linden Labs doubled the Mainland prim quota’s! The most amazing thing that’s happened in our 7 years in SL. So that’s why we’ve lost track of the place, we’ve been on a building binge (:
