Patti Smith

I did this six years ago… it’s a scan of an acrylic paint (used as watercolour) painting on watercolour paper, of the goddess (punk poet laureate) of punk.

Something Beautiful 11

Love Siouxsie’s dancing…

… I first heard this album when I was 17, 47 years ago, it was, literally, a mind-altering experience for me…

… fabulous song/gorgeous video…

… love surf rock, love the Bambi Molesters, who are from Croatia… I am from Wanganui, New Zealand, and was kind of astonished when they did a song called ‘Wanganui’, so looked it up, only to discover that it was, literally, about my home town… it was a homage to a 1950’s rock and roll film about Wanganui!…

Snarl WIP 2

As you can see, I’ve been plodding along with this gorgeous little beasty… she has totally stolen my jaded old heart (: I couldn’t have written a cooler/smarter/more deadly little beast if I’d tried! Her zen-like fearless-ness/focus just slay me… all the more so because Dafne Keen is perfect in the role… sublimely perfect. I’d hoped to finish this series with a painting of Laura in full flight, claws out, blood everywhere… but that’s not to be. To get images to work from for these paintings, I have to pause the film on my computer (the iTunes films have protective intelligence that prevents screen captures) and photograph the paused image. All the fabulous/spectacular scenes of this little beast slaying bad guys are excellent, and she is excellent… too excellent, she is always moving, just like Creaturina, almost too fast to see, she’s always a lethal blur. I would especially have liked to illustrate the big, final fight scene… doomed Logan takes out most of the bad guys, having ordered Laura to stay behind him, but she runs right up his back, leaps over his head and slaughters a few herself! My kind of lethal little beasty!

Snarl WIP

I’ve started my next ‘Laura’ painting (:

This scene is about 2/3rds through the film. Laura has not spoken a word for the whole film, seemingly incapable/too feral to talk, all she’s done is scream and growl. Logan is dying, and Laura is having to help him more and more. The Mexican nurse who helped Laura and several other children escape the military experimentation facility she’d been ‘created’ in, is dead, the other children gone. Laura clings to a photo of those other kids, and the nurse, with their names on the back… all she wants to do is get to the co-ordinates where she believes the kids to be. Dying Logan thinks it’s all a hoax, and tells her he won’t take her there… Laura suddenly starts speaking (to Logan’s astonishment) in fluent Spanish, showing him where the place is on a map, he still says it’s a hoax, and he won’t take her there. She begins, furiously, to recite the names on the photo, faster and faster, in staccato Spanish, literally right in Logan’s face. She’s a gorgeous, furious, intense little (she’s just a kid, half the size of all the adults she has to face) driven beast, far more intelligent than her creators intended her to be, though every bit as lethal, and she’s just not capable of feeling fear. And she’s angry.

This is just a straight photo of textured reality, not a textural interpretation of reality. I’ve called it ‘Contemplation‘ because, a) I can just look and look at it, and, b) it makes me think of M C Escher’s Three Worlds, probably my most-liked of his works… this is the same situation as his lithograph… and that, in turn, made me think of Plato’s allegory where reality is shadows cast on a cave wall; so, of course, my contemplation of this physical (glass) interface between my internal and external environment, where the actual interface has shadows cast on it from things (monsters? omens?) I can’t see, and may never have seen… well, I guess you can get pretty deep contemplating the toilet window at 6:30AM a few days after the (southern hemisphere) Winter Solstice (:

Something beautiful 10

Kate Bush leapt into my consciousness when I was 19 (the same age as she was), in 1978, with this fabulous, mezzo-like song…

… this is my absolute favourite Kate song… the video is total, confused, shit, just concentrate on her fabulous voice…

…Diane Coffee snuck under my radar and lodged ‘herself’ in my heart with ‘her’ amazing voice… not sure if any of the ‘woman’ in this vid are actually woman…

… Tracy Thorn’s voice is aural honey…
