Here’s some work I did four years ago. I love wasps as the amazing, space-craft-like, organic attack-ships that they are, with their amazing sci-fi colour schemes. I know most people are afraid of them, and find them far from beautiful. I decided to do a series of works exploring how ‘unsettling’ wasps could be…Beyond The Comfort Zone…playing with scale…Hive Mind… and unusual nesting places…A Girl & Her Wasp… Alice made a cameo, too, posing with her ‘pet’ wasp (:

  1. The only thing I would ask of any wasp is to stop building nests in the ground. You want them in the trees, hanging from the eaves, whatever. At least I can see those and avoid them. It wasn’t pleasant when I accidentally stepped on a ground nest while pruning the apricot tree…

    • I’ve seen one, in the ground, the entrance to which would have been a meter wide, the sound of the wasps roaring in and out was what attracted me to it… I got to within several meters of it, before caution told me not to go any closer, the air above the ground, to a height of half a meter, was a alive with wasps, they were all around me, the sound was incredible… they didn’t even land on me, just flew around me… it’s one of the most amazing things (and pretty scary, too) I’ve ever seen. There must have been tens of thousands of them.

      • Mine was quite puny and I got stung multiple times. They came after me, the little buggers…
